Hybrid email hosting versus Kerio ConnectIn this economy companies are looking for ways to get “more bang for the buck”. That is to say, leverage as much as they can, for every dollar spent. This is especially true of companies that have chosen a Hybrid Email hosting account for their domain. The benefits, of using an email hosting service, are no cost of ownership for the hardware, software and ongoing maintenance needed to implement and maintain an on-premises email server. Conversely, the cost of using an email hosting account is fixed and paid in monthly, quarterly, semi annual or annual increments. You pay for the service and the provider does everything else, from ensuring resiliency and redundancy, to keeping systems and software up to date, to filtering out any spam and virus. What is a Hybird Email Hosting account? Hybrid email hosting is a combination of a few Microsoft Exchange accounts setup for some users and the rest of the end-users setup to access with IMAP or POP3 accounts. A Microsoft Exchange account, which costs on average between $10 and $15 per month, provides email, calendar and contact synchronization and sharing. The costs go up exponentially depending on the amount of storage required. Whereas IMAP provides only email syncing, so therefore costs associated with this type of account is on average $1 to $3 per month. Why are some companies feeling as though they may have compromised their organizations productivity? The answer is simple; it is the methods through which we can communicate. In order to communicate with one another we no longer need the same microprocessor, operating system or even sit at a desktop computer for that matter. In February of this year, Gartner Group published a report that said “Smartphones accounted for 17.3 per cent of all mobile handset sales in the first quarter of 2010, up from 13.6 per cent in the same period in 2009.” Factor in the iPad and we have many platforms upon which we can do more. Is there any way to give all end-users the means to share email accounts, calendars and contacts and at the same time keep costs manageable? The solution is an alternative. Hosted Kerio Connect can provide that alternative. With Kerio Connect you can synchronize email across multiple operating system platforms. End-users can share email, calendar and contact items. Smartphones and iPad users can stay in sync wireless. In addition, Kerio Connect makes it simple to set up resource calendars for scheduling coordination, mailing lists and groups. Companies can manage more efficiently and effectively, which means, “more bang for the buck”. |

We've been considering google
We've been considering google apps, but the big hump is migrating 750 users. from Kerio to Google. If we had Exchange, it would be a breeze. Then there is the cost of archiving for e-discovery. While we get the google apps free, google's archiving solution would cost us 11K a year.
The reason we are considering moving is two fold: We have been bitten but a performance bug with Kerio Connect and Red Hat and users are starting to go around Kerio and collaborate with Google as over schools are using it. While I'd rather keep our data in-house, Kerio's inability to fix this in a timely manner and the tidal wave of adoption of Google Apps has made it nearly a foregone conclusion. Still, getting everyone's email, contacts and calendar on google is too much of a pain. I wish there was an easier solution.

We migrated to Google Apps
We migrated to Google Apps from a hosted email solution... all our users where on outlook, so the migration went like a breeze...apart from the initial resistance to change it's been a great decision so far..

You'd have to consider many
You'd have to consider many things with any online solution. #1 being that if your connection to the Internet is down for any period of time, then you have zero access to your data. An inhouse hosted solution never has that issue. Sure your server can be down that can cause problems too, but depending on where in the world you are, your net connection is more likely to be an issue than your server being down.
Hosted email has it's attractions, but the lack of control that you now have over the configuration of every aspect is also an issue to be considered.

I suppose that we need to
I suppose that we need to consider our rational as it relates to Google Apps, in particular the free service since that seems to be the most attractive option if cost is the only issue. There SLAs, user interface, support, and downtime are among many factors to consider.
But as I mentioned, most people that ultimately decide to go to a paid hosted service do so because they do not want to sacrifice services what they are willing to pay for, if it will impact the productivity of their end-users. Every decision has to be based on "What is best and why for my company?".
For example, being able to pickup the phone and call someone when there is a big problem or when some business process, that incorporates the email system, requires consultation, is key and non-negotiable.
